Yes. Carrying a pistol or revolver in a vehicle or concealed on your person without a permit is a felony under R.I. Gen. Laws § 11-47-8, punishable by 1 to 10 years in prison for a first offense. Second and subsequent convictions carry more time. The statute exempts your own home, your place of business, and land you possess, and it does not apply to a person holding a valid permit issued under § 11-47-11 or § 11-47-18. In practice this charge comes out of traffic stops and pat-downs, so the defense focuses on whether the officer had a lawful reason to stop, search, and seize. A loaded gun, a prior record, or a related charge such as assault will raise the exposure, and the count can be adopted by federal prosecutors if you have a qualifying prior conviction.
