# What if I had a valid prescription but it was expired or for another person?

A prescription is a defense only if it was validly issued to you and still current. An expired prescription, one written for someone else, or medication moved out of its labeled container can all create exposure. That said, proof that you held a genuine, valid prescription is often the strongest path to getting a possession charge dismissed, so preserving that documentation matters.
