# Is there a duty to retreat in Rhode Island?

Yes. Outside your home, Rhode Island imposes a duty to retreat before using force if you can do so safely. You may only use force, and especially deadly force, when retreat is not a safe option. The one major exception is your own home, where the castle doctrine removes the duty to retreat. This duty-to-retreat rule is why Rhode Island is not a stand your ground state, and it is often the central issue in a self-defense case.
