# Are traffic violations criminal in Rhode Island?

Most Rhode Island traffic violations are civil, not criminal. Standard moving violations like speeding, running a red light, or a lane change without signaling are handled as civil infractions at the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal, and they do not create a criminal record. A civil violation carries fines and possible license consequences, but no jail time. Some driving offenses are different. Charges such as driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving to endanger, and driving on a suspended license are criminal and are prosecuted in District Court, where a conviction can mean a permanent criminal record and jail exposure. If you are unsure which category your ticket falls into, the charge listed on the summons and the court it sends you to will tell you.
